Working memory and evolution
Working memory and evolution
About This Video
An evolutionary perspective is a helpful tool to ask questions about the function of a particular cognitive function. Baddeley emphasizes that these kinds of questions led to important discoveries, for example the role of the phonological loop in language acquisition. However, he is not convinced that one can test hypotheses about when or how cognitive capacities like working memory evolved. Whether Neanderthals possessed similar working memory processes as modern homo sapiens is an open question that might never be answered.
